چکیده

Automobile internal combustion engine connecting rod is a high volume production component subjected to complex loading. Proper optimization of this component, which is critical to the engine fuel efficiency and more vigorously pursued by the automotive industry in recent years, necessitates a detailed understanding of the applied loads and resulting stresses under in-service conditions. In this study, detailed load analysis under service loading conditions was performed for a typical connecting rod, followed by quasi-dynamic finite element analysis (FEA) to capture stress variations over a cycle of operation. On the basis of the resulting stress-time histories, variation of stress ratio, presence of mean and bending stresses, andmultiaxiality of stress states in various locations of the connecting rod under service operating conditions were investigated. It was found that even though connecting rods are typically tested and analyzed under axial loading and stress state, bending stresses are significant and a multiaxial stress state exists at the critical regions of connecting rod. A comparison is also made between stresses obtained using static FEA which is commonly performed and stresses using quasidynamic FEA. It is shown that considerable differences in obtained stresses exist between the two sets of analyses.

Study and Simulation of Shot peening Effect on Fatigue Life of a Powder Forged Connecting rod

Shot peening applies a residual compressive stress field (RCSF) on the surface of parts. It also shifts “crack nucleation sites” to sub-surface locations. A nondestructive method of measuring the stresses, Sin2ψ was utilized here and the stress values introduced to Ansys software. For this purpose, uniform stress in all directions was applied on the con rod. Loading on the rod in Ansys had thre...

Numerical solution of base shear in high tensioned cable antenna

A finite element solution based on equevalent elements is proposed for the static and dynamic analysis of tallhigh tensioned cable antennas. To reduce high number of degrees of freedom in space frame body of a structure, a simple equivalent beam element is defined for each simulative substructure. This numerical procedure is applicable to analyze complex three dimensional assemblies of substruc...

Finite Element Analysis of Connecting Rod

Abstract—The connecting rod transmits the piston load to the crank causing the latter to turn, thus converting the reciprocating motion of the piston into a rotary motion of the crankshaft. Connecting rods are subjected to forces generated by mass and fuel combustion. This study investigates and compares the fatigue behavior of forged steel, powder forged and ASTM a 514 steel cold quenched conn...

Semi Analytical Transient Dynamic Analysis of Composite Adhesive Single-lap Joints

A novel semi analytical method is developed for transient analysis of single-lap adhesive joints with laminated composite adherends subjected to dynamical loads. The presented approach has the capability of choosing arbitrary loadings and boundary conditions. In this model, adherends are assumed to be orthotropic plates that pursuant to the classical lamination theory. Stacking sequences can be...

Vertical Contraction Joint Models for Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of Concrete Arch Dam

Arch dams are generally built in cantilvever monoliths. Vertical contraction joints between monoliths control the stresses due to concrete shrinkage and temperature variations. Past studies in earthquake safety evaluation of the system often show the tensile fracture and local nonlinear deformation of joints. In this paper, some nonlinear joint element constitutive models are presented to exami...
